1987

Cheek by Jowl's modern dress production of Twelfth Night demonstrates what miracles a truly dedicated touring company can achieve witht eh slenderest of resources. Withough any perversity, the director Declan Donnellan has made a play written for the feast of the Epiphany into itself an epiphany (or revelation) so that each relationship contains a far wider spectrum of emotion that one had ever imagined. Repeatedly the homour of the scenes of carousal subsides into bitterness and even sadness, the tenderness of the love-scenes erupts into ferocity.

Patrica Kerrigan's is an exquisite Viola. It is astonishing that this should be her professional debut, apart from some appearances with the English Speaking Theatre of Amsterdam. Also outstanding are Hugh Ross's prim, self regarding Malvolio and Stephen Simms's vocally agile and emotionally desolate Feste. No lover of Shakespeare in particular or of the theatre should miss this lovely treat. Francis King, Sunday Telegraph. 18 January 1987
